Applesauce Cake

Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Keyword: cake
Author: Sarah Hawk Wade

Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups hot apple sauce
  • cups flour
  • 3 teaspoons soda
  • 1 square unsweetened chocolate grated
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 small teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup nuts
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup currants
  • 1 cup dried apricots
  • ½ cup citron

Instructions

  • Bake slowly 1 hour.

Notes

You can melt the chocolate in the applesauce. Black walnuts are traditional, English walnuts will do. Currants are zante, raisins are golden. Apricots should be cut small. I always omit the citron – nasty stuff, citron. Slowly means between 300 and 325.
